Hans Treffers graduated from the Dutch Film and
Television
Academy (Amsterdam). He started as a freelance
editing assistant/sound editor for Dutch feature films, such as
“Van Geluk Gesproken (Count your
Blessings)” by Pieter Verhoeff,
“Op
Hoop van Zegen (On Good Hope)” by Guido Pieters,
“Mama is Boos (Mommy’s mad)”
by
Ruud van Hemert, and
“Quatre Mains”
by Hans Fels. For Tommy Chong, he edited the feature
“Cheech
& Chong - Still smoking”.
Hans
was then offered a position as film-editor at
NOB (Nederlands Omroepproduktie Bedrijf: a company that
offered a variety of production services to broadcasting companies in the Netherlands,
Belgium,
Germany and Hungary). At
NOB, he edited numerous television programmes for all of the broadcasting
companies that existed within the Dutch media landscape at that time. One of the
highlights of that time was his editing of the awarded documentary on
“Jewish Amsterdam” by
Willy Lindwer. Next, Hans Treffers joined Hans Dunnewijk,
Ot Louw and Jelle Redeker at
“Het Materiaal”.
There he further specialized in the editing of documentaries for
television and theatrical release.
In
the 1990’s the transition was made from celluloid to NLE, first on
EMC (“Edit Machine Corporation”- the best
editing system of the time and the only one running on MS-DOS), later on
AVID,
Lightworks and
FCP.
(At this time, the use of Adobe (with
CS5) is becoming more customary.) Between 1994 and 1997
Hans
Treffers
worked on a number of documentaries in Malaysia for RTM, the national
broadcaster of Malaysia. A major project of that period was a documentary series
in 13 parts about the working life and work ethics of elderly people from
different Asian backgrounds:
“For a Bowl of Rice”.
In
addition Hans worked on several
documentaries for
Discovery Channel:
“Great Castles of Europe” (directed by
Mark
Verkerk)
Upon
returning to the Netherlands, he worked as a freelance editor on numerous
industrial and commercial films, as well as on the feature film
“Joyride”
by
Frank Herrebout) and the
awarded commercial
“KLM” by Henk van Mierlo.
In recent years many of the films that Hans has worked on
centered on themes regarding the changes in the Dutch educational system (such
as
“Leren op Wielen
(Learning on Wheels)”, “De Leraren veranderen (The teachers are changing)”, and
“Weet
jij het?
(Do you
know?)”
by Marijke van der Putten). He has also edited films for the Dutch Armed Forces,
such as
“Even Doorbijten (Grin and bear it)” and
“Sand or Water” by
Ruud Satijn.
Hans’
most recent projects are
“Black Diamonds”, a documentary by Saskia Vredeveld about the
new rich black population in South Africa, and
“Mission Statements”
a documentary
project by Jord den Hollander on some very notable Dutch embassies and their
staff…
